Peter was introduced to the Dohne Merino breed at a farmer’s day in the district in 1987. He purchased one ram, and was so impressed with the progeny using this ram that he has used Dohne Rams ever since. As with the cattle, weaning percentages of 90% plus are the norm. On an adjoining farm a flock of 1000 wethers is run for wool and eventually mutton when they are sold as mature sheep. All stock is selected using Dohne Merino Breed Society Standards.
The wool clip averages 20 microns for adult sheep and 17.5 microns for lambs. The owner is a founder shareholder of Lanata (Pty) Ltd. - the first independent wool brokerage that was formed in South Africa. All wool is marketed through this brokerage.
Shearing of lambs and wethers is done in November and ewes and rams are shorn in February. All sheep are sold through a local agent but direct sales are also welcome.
